Creating Memories... One Story at a Time

People often ask why I chose to write children's stories. The answer is simple—it began with my grandchildren.

As a grandfather, I discovered that some of life's most meaningful moments happen when a child sits beside you, eager to hear a story. Those quiet moments of imagination, laughter, curiosity, and learning inspired me to begin writing books that children would enjoy today and remember years from now.

Growing up in the beautiful community of Neyaashiinigmiing on the Bruce Peninsula, I learned to appreciate the gifts that nature provides. The forests, lakes, wildlife, and changing seasons became my classroom long before I realized they would one day become the inspiration for my stories. Through my Ojibwe heritage, I also learned that every living thing has value and that every experience has something to teach us.

These lessons naturally found their way into my books.

Whether a child is following Sonia Snail on one of her tiny adventures, learning patience while fishing in The Bass That Couldn't Be Caught, discovering traditional Ojibwe teachings with Keesis, or sharing heartwarming moments in Pure Imagination, each story is written with a purpose. I want children to laugh, wonder, imagine, ask questions, and discover that kindness, respect, perseverance, and family are some of life's greatest treasures.

My books are not written to preach or teach lessons in obvious ways. Instead, I hope children learn naturally through adventure, curiosity, and the experiences of the characters they meet.

As an Indigenous author, I also believe it is important for children to see Indigenous culture presented with warmth, authenticity, and respect. Many of my stories gently introduce Ojibwe traditions, the natural world, and the importance of caring for one another without losing the fun and excitement that make children's books so enjoyable.

Most of all, I write because stories have the power to bring families together. A bedtime story becomes a conversation. A conversation becomes a memory. Years later, that memory often becomes one of the moments a child remembers most about growing up.

If my books help even one family spend a little more time reading together, exploring nature, asking questions, or sharing a smile, then I have accomplished exactly what I hoped to do.
